So it's that time, I've gotten back from my trips and now I've got time to post up some of these WIPs images that I've been talking about.

Since Lan Fan had a lot of little stuff going on, I figured I'd break it down into smaller sections to make it more manageable. I also figured that posting up all of these WIP images will help when I post the Sintra tutorial that I'm still writing /sigh.

So... The Automail Arm:

Created with Sintra, layered in a few places. It is two pieces, that I hold together with elastic and velcro. You'll notice a section where I feature the little circle. It looked a lot better before I heated the plastic, but afterwards it warped so I had to attempt to fix it by hand... didn't work so well. oh well!\

Not much else to say, painted it using Duplicolor in two different shades of silver, used a bit of clearcoat and polished!

Enjoy!

Your tutorials have proven very helpful so I thank you for sharing them.

If I may ask how you painted the different sections with the different shades of grey please? Did you tape them of? if so did you use painters tape? Also what clearcoat did you use?

It really varies on what I use to tape off. Normally just regular masking tape (scotch?). as for clear coat, with all of my projects I use the Duplicolor Color-match clear coat. I use typically 9-12 coats with minimal sanding, and then a buff and polish.

I see, and thank you for taking the time to reply.

I am about to attempt to make my own automail arm and I really like the finish you got on yours. I didn't think there would be that many coats of clear coat. Is that many and the sanding essential to achieving the shine you did? I am assuming you used Duplicolor in chrome and silver.

So the scotch tape didn't ruin the finish on the painted sections when you taped them off?

Well the idea is you apply the clear coat in light, brief coats, many times. If you apply heavy coats, it runs and easily dulls the finish. It is pretty quick drying, and I don't sand in between. I just wait for it to dry, make sure there isn't any debris, and apply a new coat. In the end I sand with 2000 grit, and then polish / buff the crap out of it.

With the tape, as long as you aren't taping onto tacky paint, you should be fine. Wait for the paint to fully dry before applying, and use Masking tape, not clear scotch tape. I just meant that Scotch had a brand I was pretty sure I'd used in the past. There is also a green masking tape that supposedly gives very clean lines, without damaging the paint. I've bought a roll, but I haven't used it yet. Might be worth looking into if you are worried about damaging your finish.

Just to be clear on the paint, I don't use the "metallic" finish paints, but the Color Match system silvers and pewters - these are usually a Honda or Toyota color. These are all can spray paints.

Good luck!

id love it if you could put up these tutorials, the automail came out gorgeous. How did you attach the arm and shoulder pieces to your arm?

Thank you, the tutorials are finished, although they aren't specific to this armor, or how I fashioned the armor itself, only a portion. the armor is attached with elastic straps.

I'll be making my site live (hopefully) tonight, which is where my tutorials will be posted. I'll make a journal entry and update all of my sintra related submissions when it is ready.

That's so neat! I admire your skills~
I never used Sintra before, is it easy to use? I think I've seen some at home depot before, but it was quite heavy o.O

Thank you <3

Sintra is really easy to work with, I didn't realize you could get it at home depot though. I'll check that out. I use thinner sheets, so for the most part the armor I make is very light weight. My Scythe was very heavy though.
